How do I know and decide what I really want in life?

How do you know? You probably won’t know, but that is okay.

I know some people tell you there is a sure way to find out what you want to do, but I have found you simply need to live long enough.

I am not talking about living as in being alive, I am talking about living as in… living (the real kind). The kind where you do not allow the pressures of society, expectation of others, or your past failures to hold you back. I believe most people do know what they really want in life because they never started the journey.

Most of us start a journey with an unrealistic, fantasized perspective of something we do not know much about. If you never start the journey, you will never realize your perspective is unrealistic. If you start too late, you may find out it was not your desire, but someone else’s the whole time.

The best way to overcome this is to get out there and experience life firsthand. Get out and break some stuff, make some choices, make some mistakes, and hone your perspective.

Do not look at mistakes and failures as permanent or proof of some sort of inadequacy. Look at your mistakes as opportunities to live. I look at my mistakes as more than lessons, I look at them as proof that I have expanded my reality. It makes it easier for me to forgive myself and to get back up and try again.

I mean, why do we expect perfection right out the gate in the first place (which helps explain why so many people never start)?

We all know that one person who likes to make fun of people who continue to explore life through their failures. The truth is that person poking fun at people wishes they had half your courage. They are only making fun of you to keep themselves from looking within and examining themselves.

Too often we allow the thoughts of trolls and hecklers to keep us from living.

You ever wonder why so many people hate (I mean strongly dislike) Monday? It is because they believe the weekend is the only time they get to do what they want to do. As a result, when Monday comes around, they believe they have to return to living someone else’s expectation of them.

They have a feeling that they should be doing something else, but they do not know what it is. They feel their talents aren’t being properly utilized at their current job, but they do not know which talents matter to them most.

Fear of the unknown causes you to procrastinate, waiting for the stars to align so you know what your next step should be. Believe me when I tell you, the stars rarely align.

If you want to discover what you really want in life, you are going to have to get there and find out. Fail, live, succeed, grow, change… they are all the result of one thing – action.

Continued blessings,

Yes you are so right! I guess we are fearful of failing, but like you said why do we have such high expectations of ourselves that we expect it to be perfect out the gate which is so unrealistic! Fear is such a powerful emotion and yet God tells us that we are not to be fearful or anxious for anything. If we can overcome that fear imagine what we can accomplish in our lives for God and for ourselves. Your articles are so so good Dre! They are very thought-provoking and really causes me to reexamine everything in my life to help me see what I need to change. But even more, you give us tangible strategies to effect the change. Thank you.
