The best advice I can give anyone is to change themselves from the inside out, not the outside in.
What we tend to do is figure out what outcomes we want in life and then mimic someone who is living that life.
So if you want to be in-shape, you may start running… because most runners seem to be fit.
If you want to lose weight, you start eating more salads and less candy… because most healthy people replace processed sugar with fruits and vegetables.
If you want to make more money, you may decide to start a business or go to college…. because that is what wealthy people do.
While these statements are true on the surface, you are missing the key ingredient of success.
YOU WANT TO DO IT!
Most people want to change something about their life, but they are crippled by doubt and a fear of failure.
We sometimes describe doubt and a fear of failure with words like procrastination or laziness. However, believe me when I tell you, if you knew with 100% confidence you could keep your resolutions and create your dream life, you would put all your effort into it.
- you doubt your ability to commit to running 10 miles a week because you can barely walk 10 steps
- you are afraid you will put the weight back on a few months after you lost it
- You fear your business venture will deplete your resources before it generates an income
Not to mention the overall fear of embarrassment whenever we set a goal and do not achieve it (this is why people stop dreaming).
We all have doubt and a fear of failure lurking behind our inaction; and with good reason.
60% of people who make a New Year’s Resolution quit their resolution within 30 days after starting.
Instead of simply saying change is hard, start with the fact that most people are trying to change their actions (who they want to be) without addressing their internal beliefs (who they are today).
If you never change your internal beliefs to match your external actions, you will find doubt and a fear of failure will stop you at the first sign of difficulty.
If you change yourself from the outside in, you will always revert back to your previous lifestyle.
If you start on the inside and work your way out, you will sustain the changes you want to make in your life – because that is who you are.
There is nothing harder than being someone you are not, so make sure the person on the inside matches who you are want to be on the outside.
